Delhi govt roll outs new Air Pollution Mitigation Plan, more e-rickshaws soon – Electric Vehicles News

The government plans to install ANPR cameras with digital display screens at all border entry points to identify and restrict EoL vehicles.

The Delhi state government has unveiled its comprehensive Air Pollution Mitigation Plan 2025, titled ‘Shuddh Hawa Sabka Adhikar – Pradushan Par Zordar Prahar’. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta launched the initiative on Tuesday, outlining a strategic roadmap to combat air pollution in the national capital. The plan incorporates green initiatives, expansion of electric mobility, traffic reforms, and scientific innovations.

Key Initiatives for Air Quality Improvement

The Air Pollution Mitigation Plan 2025 introduces several measures aimed at enhancing air quality across Delhi. A significant component involves the deployment of 2,299 electric autos by Delhi Metro at various hubs to bolster last-mile connectivity. Furthermore, the government intends to install mist sprayers at 13 identified pollution hotspots to mitigate airborne particulate matter.

In an effort to promote afforestation, the administration will commence the planting of 70 lakh saplings under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, starting June 5, coinciding with World Environment Day. This campaign, originally initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to foster environmental stewardship while honoring mothers.

Vehicular Emission Control, Electric Mobility Expansion

The plan places considerable emphasis on curbing vehicular emissions and accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles. Pollution Under Control (PUC) centres will undergo audits every six months to ensure operational integrity and prevent corruption. To alleviate traffic congestion, a Smart Intelligent Traffic System is slated for implementation across the city.

Regarding End-of-Life (EoL) vehicles, the government plans to install Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras with digital display screens at all border entry points to identify and restrict their entry into Delhi. SMS alerts will be dispatched to EoL vehicles registered in neighboring states, cautioning against entering the capital, and informational billboards will be strategically placed at entry points.

A substantial push for electric mobility is central to the plan, which includes the installation of 18,000 public and semi-public electric vehicle (EV) charging points across various urban locations, including malls, airports, railway and bus stations, and commercial complexes. An audit of existing EV infrastructure will be conducted to facilitate upgrades and expansion.

The plan also mandates the transition of 80 percent of government vehicles to clean fuel and proposes a new EV policy to stimulate electric vehicle sales. Notably, only EVs will be permitted in forest and protected areas, with non-essential non-electric vehicles gradually being phased out from these zones. Chief Minister Gupta affirmed that the previously implemented Odd-Even policy would not be reinstated, citing public inconvenience.
