Days ahead of the formation of the new BJP government in Delhi, L-G VK Saxena has rolled out a “four-pronged strategy” to clean the Yamuna River in the city over a period of three years.
The Raj Niwas listed the steps to be taken under the ambitious project to get the job done and informed that the work in this regard has already begun today.
This comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised to the people of Delhi during the election campaign that the BJP government in Delhi would clean the river which has remained dirty for a long time.
What Did The Delhi Raj Niwas Say?
The L-G office said that Saxena held a meeting with the Chief Secretary and ACS (I&FC) on Saturday and asked them to start working on the plan immediately.
Raj Niwas said that the work in the river began on Sunday with the arrival of trash skimmers, weed harvesters, and a dredge utility craft at the site.
It informed that the trash skimmer has begun its work at the Vasudev Ghat while the weed harvester has become operational near Signature Bridge and another weed harvester machine has started working at ITO.
Delhi L-G’s Four-Pronged Strategy To Clean Yamuna
- Cleaning the riverbed: The trash, garbage and silt in the Yamuna river stream will be removed.
- Cleaning the drains: Cleaning operations in the Najafgarh Drain, Supplementary Drain, and all other major drains will start simultaneously.
- Fixing Sewage Treatment Plants: The authorities will keep a watch on the existing STPs and maintain the output.
- Increasing treatment: Time-bound construction of new STPs/DSTPs on drains to meet the shortfall of treating nearly 400 MGD of sewer.

The Raj Niwas said that the execution of the plan in nearly three years will “require seamless coordination between various agencies and departments that include DJB, I&FC, MCD, Environment Department, PWD and DDA”.
The monitoring of the cleaning work will be done “at the highest level” on a weekly basis.
The L-G has also directed the Delhi Pollution Control Committee to keep a strict vigil on the discharge of untreated effluent into drains by the industrial units in the national capital.
