Delhi-Meerut RRTS: Train trial runs begin between key stations in the national capital – Railways News
The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has initiated trial runs of the Namo Bharat train between New Ashok Nagar and Sarai Kale Khan stations, marking a significant milestone in the development of the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS).
The first trial run was carried out on Saturday night, with a Namo Bharat train moving slowly along the down line from New Ashok Nagar to Sarai Kale Khan. The train was manually operated during this initial phase to test the compatibility of the signalling system with train operations.
As the trials progress, the NCRTC will conduct comprehensive evaluations to ensure smooth coordination with key subsystems such as tracks, platform screen doors (PSDs), and the overhead electrification system. High-speed trials are scheduled to follow as part of the broader testing process.
During the trial, the train crossed several significant urban features for the first time — including the Yamuna River, Barapullah flyover, and Ring Road — before arriving at Sarai Kale Khan station. The construction of the 1.3-kilometre-long bridge over the Yamuna was described as particularly challenging, with the structure running parallel to the DND Flyway and featuring 32 pillars, 626 metres of which are directly over the river.
Another engineering feat was the viaduct built to reach Sarai Kale Khan station, which spans over the busy Barapullah flyover and Ring Road. The 4.5-kilometre stretch under trial is set to become a vital link in the corridor.
Once operational, this section will enable seamless, air-conditioned services between Sarai Kale Khan and Meerut. NCRTC recently energised the overhead equipment (OHE) for this segment to support future train operations.
Sarai Kale Khan station is being prepared as the originating terminal of the corridor. The station’s roof and façade are nearing completion, with 12 escalators and four lifts already installed and functional. Additional escalators and lifts have also been fitted at the five entry and exit gates. Platform screen doors have been installed across all platforms.
Efforts are underway to integrate the station with nearby transport hubs, enhancing accessibility for passengers. This includes connections to the Delhi Metro’s Pink Line, Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, Veer Haqiqat Rai Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT), and the Ring Road Bus Stand.
At present, Namo Bharat trains are operating on a 55-kilometre stretch between New Ashok Nagar in Delhi and Meerut South, covering 11 stations. The NCRTC aims to make the entire 82-kilometre Delhi-Meerut corridor fully operational within this year. Once completed, travel time between Sarai Kale Khan and Modipuram in Meerut will be cut to under an hour.
