Delhi NCR weather forecast: Delhi braces for wet week ahead as IMD predicts rain, thunderstorms and high humidity
New Delhi and its surrounding areas will see a continued spell of rain, cloud cover and thunderstorms this week, with no heatwave in sight. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the wet weather will stretch through to Saturday, August 2, affecting Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Gurugram.
The rains are expected to ease the heat, but the city will still deal with high humidity levels and scattered downpours through the week. The IMD described the short-term forecast as “Generally cloudy sky. Light to moderate rain accompanied with thunderstorm/lightning.”
Temperature drop on the Cards
The IMD expects Delhi to record temperatures between 33°C and 35°C during the day and 26°C to 28°C at night on Monday. By Tuesday, July 29, the range is likely to shift lower, with daytime temperatures between 29°C and 31°C, and nighttime readings between 23°C and 25°C. These figures follow a recent spike, where Delhi had hit 37.5°C — 2.6 degrees above the usual seasonal average.
On July 28, according to data from AQI.in, the capital is forecasted to start the day at 27.6°C and peak at 36.7°C. Rain is highly likely, with an 89 percent chance of moderate showers under mostly cloudy skies. Winds may reach up to 22.7 km/h, and the humidity is expected to hover around 58 percent. Despite the rain, visibility should remain good at 9.9 km.
Rain gear advised for the week ahead
Residents are urged to carry umbrellas and wear light, breathable clothes. Slippery roads are likely, especially during morning and evening commutes. The IMD advises staying hydrated and driving with caution.

Thursday brings a slight drop in rainfall but more showers, with highs around 33.4°C. Friday may bring patchy rain across the city.Saturday, August 2, is forecasted to reach 36.8°C with partly cloudy skies, and Sunday may touch 36.4°C. Rains across India: Not just a Delhi story
While Delhi’s weather stays damp but manageable, other parts of the country face much heavier conditions. Northeast India is expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall on July 28, with another round likely between August 1 and 3. The IMD has issued warnings for areas at risk of flooding, particularly those in low-lying terrain.
Rajasthan could see even more intense rainfall. The IMD has predicted “extremely heavy rainfall during 29th–31st July” in some isolated pockets. These areas are advised to take extra precautions.
Elsewhere, unusually heavy rainfall has already been recorded at certain locations. Some parts of Madhya Maharashtra’s ghats, East Madhya Pradesh, the Gujarat region, Coastal and South Interior Karnataka, interior Tamil Nadu and Assam have all seen falls exceeding 21 cm.
Monsoon swings and the need for caution
This shift marks a clear change from the typically dry end of July. The widespread and intense rainfall across states points to the volatile nature of India’s monsoon cycle this year. It’s brought brief respite from the summer’s heat, but also introduced the risk of flash floods and waterlogging in cities.
The IMD has repeatedly urged people to follow local weather bulletins, particularly in flood-prone or rural areas where rainfall can escalate quickly into hazardous conditions.
