Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Tuesday announced that a cloud-seeding operation to trigger artificial rain in the national capital would most probably be conducted today. The operation is weather-dependent in Kanpur, where the aircraft to be used for the operation is stationed.

Sirsa clarified that the present visibility in Kanpur stands at 2,000 metres, whereas a minimum of 5,000 metres is needed for aircraft to take off the plane safely.

He further added that if there is an improvement in conditions and the plane takes off successfully, cloud seeding over Delhi would be possible between 12:30 pm and 1 pm.

“Once visibility improves, the aircraft will take off from Kanpur, conduct cloud seeding in Delhi, and then return,” Sirsa said, ANI reported.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta labelled cloud seeding a “necessity for the capital” and termed it a path-breaking experiment to address the environmental crisis of the city.

“This is the first of its kind in Delhi. We are hoping it will bring the high pollution levels in the city under control,” Gupta said, while the government is hoping for good results from this move.
