New Delhi: The Indian Railways is working on enhancing connectivity between major cities in Northern India through the Delhi-Amritsar train route for which the proposed Delhi-Amritsar High Speed Rail (DAMHSR) project aims to establish a 465-kilometre rail line connecting Delhi, Chandigarh, and Amritsar. This line will have 13 stations across Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab.

The DAMHSR project was started by the Government of India in 2019 and is one of six new high-speed rail corridors aimed at improving transportation efficiency. The tender related formalities started in October 2020. The project is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Delhi and Amritsar with a maximum speed of 350 kilometres per hour and an operational speed of 320 kilometres per hour while the average speed during operations will be approximately 250 kilometres per hour.

With this rail, the travel time between Delhi and Amritsar is expected to be one hour and fifty-2 minutes.

Route and Stations

The Delhi Amritsar Train will include a mix of elevated, underground, and at-grade sections. The route will primarily follow a greenfield alignment through central Haryana, partially paralleling the existing Delhi – Amritsar – Katra Expressway.

The line will serve the following stations:

– Delhi

– Asaudha

– Rohtak

– Jind

– Kaithal

– Sangrur

– Malerkotla

– Ludhiana

– Jalandhar

– Amritsar

Additionally, a spur line will connect Sangrur, Patiala, Rajpura, and Chandigarh.

Fare Structure

The fare is expected to be set around at 1.5 times the current first-class AC fare on Indian Railways. The final fare details will be announced closer to the commencement of commercial operations. This will be done to provide clarity for future passengers traveling from Delhi to Amritsar.

This project is being supervised by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL). Other key players include Magnitude Consortium, PK Engineers, and APECO Infrastructure India Pvt. Ltd., among others. These contractors look after data collection, ridership studies, and environmental assessments to ensure the project meets all regulatory and safety standards.

The trains on the DAMHSR project will be equipped with an Urgent Earthquake Detection and Alarm System (UrEDAS) that automatically activates braking systems in the event of an earthquake. This feature aims to enhance passenger safety during travel.
