Delhi’s air quality sees dramatic improvement with 163 clean days this year
Highlighting Delhi’s steady progress in air quality, Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Saturday announced that the national capital has achieved 163 clean air days — categorised as Good, Satisfactory, or Moderate AQI — from January 1 to September 6.
This figure already surpasses the total number of clean air days in the full years of 2016 (110 days), 2017 (152 days), and 2018 (159 days), and equals the 163 days in 2022. With nearly four months remaining in the year, 2025 is on track to set a new record for the highest number of clean air days in the last decade, reflecting the Delhi government’s committed and data-driven approach to environmental enhancement.

The entire month of August stood out as a milestone, with each of its 31 days qualifying as a clean air day and an average AQI of 89, while the first six days of September have extended this streak.
Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said, “Our multi-tiered strategy, integrated with necessary technological interventions such as mechanised road sweeping, advanced bio-mining techniques, and responsible waste management systems, is actively combating pollution and delivering measurable outcomes. These efforts are evident in the 163 clean air days recorded so far in 2025, which already rival or exceed entire annual performances from several past years, paving the way for a potentially record-breaking year.”
“The achievement of all 31 days in August as clean air days, coupled with the seamless continuation into September with six consecutive clean air days. By prioritising ground-level actions like extensive road cleaning, garbage removal, and pollution enforcement, we are reducing emissions while building a resilient framework for long-term sustainability. This progress aligns with national goals under Prime Minister Modi’s guidance, emphasising community involvement and innovative solutions to ensure cleaner air for every Delhiite,” he added.
The minister said that these milestones are integral to the broader Delhi government’s Environment Action Plan 2025, which encompasses collaborative efforts across agencies, public participation, and technology-driven interventions to address pollution holistically. Initiatives such as large-scale tree plantations under Van Mahotsav 2025 and rigorous civic maintenance have played a pivotal role in this success, contributing to a greener, cleaner, and more livable Delhi.
In addition, the Minister addressed preparations for upcoming festivals to be observed in the national capital. He said that the Delhi government has made all necessary arrangements for Ganesh Visarjan.
“Over 60 artificial ponds have been created to facilitate safe and environment-friendly celebrations for the ongoing Ganesh Chaturthi and the upcoming Durga Puja, allowing residents to uphold cultural traditions while safeguarding our natural resources and preventing pollution of water bodies. These ponds are strategically located across all districts, including multiple sites in West Delhi, East Delhi, and North-West Delhi, with water that will be treated and recycled for uses such as road sprinkling and park irrigation, promoting a zero-waste approach to festive observances,” he added.
