New Delhi: Residents and tourists in Delhi may soon be able to enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the city, asFlights will run for up to four hours a day, though this may be extended depending on demand and approvals from DDA.hot air balloon rides are expected to start in the coming months at multiple scenic locations. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has selected four launch sites and handed over operations to a private company for three years, with an option to extend the contract up to nine years.
The balloon rides will operate from the Yamuna Sports Complex, Commonwealth Games Sports Complex, and two riverside locations—Asita and Baansera—both part of the city’s riverfront redevelopment plan. According to officials, the rides could be available as early as winter, coinciding with Delhi’s clear skies and pleasant weather, as per a report by NDTV.
Reportedly, each location will have a dedicated area of 3,600 square metres (60 by 60 metres) for the setup and launch of balloons. The selected operator is expected to begin services within two months. Flights will run for up to four hours a day, though this may be extended depending on demand and approvals from DDA.
The initiative will follow a revenue-sharing model, with all ticket sales first going into the DDA’s account to ensure transparency. Ticket prices are yet to be finalised and will require DDA’s approval before public release.
This project is part of the DDA’s broader effort to promote tourism and make Delhi’s green and restored spaces more accessible. Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, who is leading the Yamuna riverfront revival, said the rides aim to reconnect people with the capital’s natural environment.
The chosen sites have undergone major transformation. Asita, once an encroached riverbank, is now a landscaped green stretch. Baansera, located near Sarai Kale Khan, has been redeveloped into the city’s first bamboo-themed park, featuring more than 30,000 bamboo plants, water features, and a musical fountain.
The Yamuna Sports Complex in Surajmal Vihar is DDA’s largest sports venue, while the Commonwealth Games Sports Complex, built for the 2010 Games, continues to serve as a key public facility.
Officials noted that this would be the first time Delhi offers hot air balloon rides. They hope the activity will not only attract adventure lovers but also raise awareness about river conservation and urban green zones.
Final approvals related to ticketing and operations are expected shortly. If everything proceeds on schedule, the rides could take off by early winter.
