Delhi’s Sky Gamble: Will Cloud Seeding Wash Away the City’s Toxic Smog?

1 min

This special report focuses on the Delhi government’s plan to use cloud seeding, or artificial rain, to combat the city’s severe air pollution, a project undertaken with IIT Kanpur. Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa stated, ‘Regarding cloud seeding, as soon as the weather clears up in Kanpur, our aircraft will take off from there today. ‘ The initiative aims to induce rainfall to wash away pollutants, but its execution has faced repeated delays due to unfavourable weather conditions. A successful test flight was conducted, firing flares over areas like Burari, but it did not result in rain due to low atmospheric moisture. The project involves a Cessna aircraft from Kanpur dispersing substances like silver iodide to trigger precipitation. While the government remains ready, the effectiveness and feasibility of the plan are contingent on specific meteorological conditions, leaving the capital waiting for a potential, scientifically-induced reprieve from its toxic air.
