Dementia-friendly music program returning to Lacombe Performing Arts Centre
The free weekly program runs Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. from October 7 to December 2 at the LPAC
Dementia-friendly music sessions are returning to the Lacombe Performing Arts Centre (LPAC) this Fall.
The program was built under the Alberta Health Services (AHS) initiative “Connecting People and Community for Living Well” as part of supporting an inclusive community for people suffering from dementia.
The LPAC board and staff took training to become a dementia-friendly facility, Executive Director Rosanne Kerekes said.
“We worked closely with an AHS staff member to build the platform of our program. It started in 2022, and we run two sessions a year, one in the fall and one in the spring.”
Participants in the program will get to do sing-alongs, rhythm activities, music bingo, painting with music, and more.
“We would like to create more intergenerational experiences this season and are actively looking for preschool and kindergarten classes that would like to attend for some of these activities as well,” Kerekes said.
The program is a great way for people with dementia to still be involved in their community in a supportive environment.
“Music is shown to uplift spirits, improve memory, and enhance quality of life. We’ve seen one gentleman whose memory was quickly declining begin singing love songs to his wife, whom he had trouble remembering. Another participant this past year was nearly non-verbal and would leave singing songs,” Kerekes said.
“While we have created some great relationships, we quickly learned we are only part of the journey for a short time for people with dementia, as change happens so quickly. We look forward to making a positive impact on our participants’ lives for the little time we can.”
To register a participant, caregivers can register the participant only or attend with the participant.
The program is also supported by FCSS, so there is no registration cost.
“We have found it is a nice opportunity to create a community for caregivers as well. Registration can be done by calling the office, 403-588-4386, or emailing admin@lacombepac.com,” Kerekes said.
The free weekly program runs Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. from October 7 to December 2 at the LPAC.
