Despite Terrible Reviews, Tyler Perry’s New Madea Movie Refuses to Leave Streaming Charts
While Madea’s Destination Wedding failed to win over critics, Tyler Perry’s comedy-drama is still a success for the award-winning filmmaker and Netflix. The latest installment in the Madea Cinematic Universe remains a streaming hit and one of Netflix’s top movies.
Per Flix Patrol, Madea’s Destination Wedding is the second most popular film on Netflix’s Top 10 movie chart. The film was previously No. 1 and was joined on the list by its predecessor, A Madea Homecoming. Madea’s Destination Wedding lost the top spot to the Sony-produced animated musical fantasy KPop Demon Hunters — but it’s still bringing in a big audience.

The 13th film in the Madea Cinematic Universe and part of Perry’s exclusive deal with Netflix, Madea’s Destination Wedding stars Perry as the titular short-fused matriarch, Mabel “Madea” Simmons. Perry had intended to retire from playing Madea after A Madea Homecoming, having grown weary of playing the role he’d inhabited since 1999. However, he returned for at least one more movie.
Madea’s Destination Wedding follows Madea and her family to the Bahamas after her grandniece Tiffany (played by Diamond White) falls in love with a rapper and announces they’re tying the knot. However, Madea and company suspect there’s more to the impromptu wedding than meets the eye — especially since Tiffany’s mother Debra (Taja V. Simpson) is pushing for the nuptials. The film features the typical Madea shenanigans and a notable twist that reveals the reason behind the marriage.
Originally debuting with a 51% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Madea’s Destination Wedding reviews have plummeted. The critics’ score has significantly dipped to 14%, making it one of the worst-reviewed Perry films to date. Audiences haven’t fancied the film either, as it has a 44% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite the negative feedback, Madea’s Destination Wedding is the second chart-topper released by Perry this summer. His previous film, the drama Straw, became Netflix’s most popular movie immediately after its June release. It also received better reviews and widespread praise for its lead actor, Taraji P. Henson.
Perry has more Netflix projects either released or in the works. His faith-based movie, R&B, is set for release in 2026. His Netflix drama series Beauty in Black has been renewed for Season 2 after Season 1 was also a hit for the streamer. And his sitcom Tyler Perry’s Miss Governor, co-created with Niya Palmer and starring Terri J. Vaughn, premiered on Netflix in May 2025.
Madea’s Destination Wedding is now streaming on Netflix.
