Dia Mirza takes a step towards clean air in Mumbai with other activists – Beauty Pageants – Indiatimes
Former beauty queen, actress and environmentalist Dia Mirza and other worried citizens have urged the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to curb pollution and ensure clean air in Mumbai. The beauty queen, along with Sumaira Abdulali (Awaaz Foundation), Hema Ramani (BEAG), Shruti Panchal and Rasika Nachankar (Waatavaran Foundation), met the Additional Municipal Commissioner Sanjeev Kumar on Monday and submitted suggestions for a 10-year action plan to reduce health risks posed by the city’s high levels of air pollution.
They talked about the causes of pollution, such as waste from construction and demolition projects, solid waste management, and the requirement for an institutional framework to address air pollution in the nation’s commercial capital on a local level.
Speaking about it to a leading daily, Dia said, “The negative effects of air pollution on public health are clearly visible… and are to blame for increased respiratory illnesses and heart conditions. In addition, reports have established that air pollution stunts children’s brain development and even causes cancer.”
She also added that the amount of particulate matter (PM) in Mumbai had reached an all-time high, and other pollutants continue to contaminate the air that our senior citizens and children breathe.
The CAM member expressed optimism that the city government and the populace might work together to develop a roadmap for a cleaner, healthier Mumbai and raise the standard of the air that people breathe.
