Digital Touch Speeds Up Information Flow To Rural Communities
BALING, Sept 13 (Bernama) — The integration of digital technology, spurred by increasingly sophisticated advancements, has dramatically accelerated the flow of information to citizens, including those in rural areas, particularly in Kedah.
Kedah Regional Development Authority (KEDA) chairman, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, noted that some 20 to 30 years ago, areas like Sik, Baling and Padang Terap were known as remote hinterlands with little technological infrastructure.
“However, with today’s technology, what we call the digital touch, information can reach the community much more rapidly.
“Yet, this information can itself be categorised into three types: the truth, half-truths and slander, which are then compiled and go viral,” he said while officiating the Kita MADANI Carnival and MADANI Rakyat programme at Kampung Lapang near here today.
Also present were the Malaysian Department of Information, senior director of Management, Naim Fahmi Ahmad Tajuddin, and the State Department of Information director, Nurazila Azizan.
Mahdzir said programmes such as the Kita MADANI Carnival provide the public with opportunities to access verified information and learn about the Federal government initiatives available for citizens.
“At today’s event, we can ask what is true and what is not… because in a globalised world where a minority can influence the majority… it is difficult to distinguish fact from fiction.
“A minority—perhaps just three people—can create ‘content’ and spread it… and it will be seen or heard by tens or even hundreds of thousands,” he said.
Meanwhile, he added that the Kita MADANI Carnival also aims to inform the public about government initiatives designed for rural communities.
“Numerous initiatives in the economic sphere, education, or public welfare can be explained to the people… perhaps not all at once, but at the very least, it allows the public to understand what the government is doing,” he said.
