A multi-layered romantic tale against a larger socio-cultural setting is what fans can expect from Imtiaz Ali’s upcoming film. Production on the untitled film will commence in August 2025, with a theatrical release scheduled for Baisakhi 2026.

There are both well-known actors and up-and-coming performers in the ensemble. The ensemble is headed by Diljit Dosanjh, Vedang Raina, Sharvari, and Naseeruddin Shah. In his earlier work, Ali has frequently explored issues of human connection, identity, and belonging, resulting in a narrative that is both modern and humorous.

Three of the most revered artists in Indian cinema—music maestro A.R. Rahman, lyricist Irshad Kamil, and writer-director Imtiaz Ali—are getting back together. Their past work together has produced unforgettable musical adventures, and audiences can anticipate that the score of this film will rely significantly on the expressive potential of its score.

Imtiaz Ali on love, loss, and belonging

The filmmakers announced the movie, “Stories aren’t just told—they are felt, lived, and remembered; Imtiaz Ali brings to the silver screen one such unforgettable saga of love and longing.”

Imtiaz Ali also stated in his statement, “Tum mere paas hote ho goya, jab koi doosra nahin hota.’ (‘You are with me, however, when there is no one else.’) – Momin”

He enquired before delving into the story’s emotional depth, “Can love really be lost? Can home be taken away from someone’s heart?”

Ali went on to say that this film contains a lot of love and it is both personal and has a vast canvas. He shared, “It is a story of a boy and a girl, but also a country.”

The filmmaker concluded by stating, “Wish us well as we dive into the currents of this dynamic story; we hope to emerge next year with a touching cinematic experience in a theatre near you.”

Glimpse of the story’s setting and scope

Although the makers have not revealed much about the plot, we do know that it takes place during a historical or transitional period and that it weaves together personal and political themes. More details about the project will likely be announced in the following months as production begins in August and an April 2026 festival release is anticipated.
