Chhava is unstoppable at the box office and is all set to cross the Rs. 500 crore mark. It is produced by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films and this will be the only production house to have two films in the coveted club. The other films that have collected more than Rs. 500 crores are Gadar 2, Pathaan, Animal and Pushpa 2. Interestingly, while the other films managed to collect so much due to star power, that’s not entirely the case with Stree 2 and Chhaava, and this makes the victory march of Maddock Films even more remarkable.

Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said he’s not surprised with Chhaava’s box office run. He also revealed, “Dinesh Vijan shared the scratch of Chhaava’s trailer with me long ago in the first half of November 2024 (before it was unveiled to the public on January 22, 2025). I told him that I loved it. My instant reaction was that it’s a box office bonanza.” His expectations were fully met after watching the Vicky Kaushal-starrer, “I rarely go to cinemas to watch a film but I really want to watch Chhaava in cinemas again.”

He also marvelled, “Even his film like Munjya paid off in such a big way. Dinesh Vijan once told me, ‘I have stars in my film but my content is my bigger star’! The star power can bring in the audience for the first couple of days but eventually, the word-of-mouth spreads faster than fire.”

Trade analyst Atul Mohan remarked, “It is worked majorly due to the right type of content. You have to be passionate to know what would work and go for it. A film like Munjya had no star power and yet, it crossed the Rs. 100 crore mark. Stree’s first part had collected around Rs. 130 crores. Many expected that at the max, the sequel would collect Rs. 200-250 crores or Rs. 300 crores in the best-case scenario. But no one ever expected that it would do so well.”

Film exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi explained, “It’s the combination of choosing the right tales, deploying the right storytelling styles and some solid marketing. These are the victories not of the actors or directors as much but these are the victories of the producers. It takes serious conviction for a producer to back such films with actors who are not true-blue mass stars yet and then pepper them with all the commercial elements, reasonable budget, marketing muscle etc. Hence, this is Dinesh Vijan’s victory and then that of Laxman Utekar followed by Vicky Kaushal.”

Atul Mohan also noted, “Also, the common factor for many of their films is that they also work hard on their music. Chhaava was an exception. But Stree 2, Munjya, Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya and Zara Hatke Zara Bachke had the advantage of super-hit music.”

Thama, Shakti Shalini – next blockbusters?
It’s no surprise that the trade is now over-expecting from all upcoming films of Maddock Films, especially from their horror-comedy films of 2025 – Thama, which releases on Diwali and Shakti Shalini, which will be out on December 31. Atul Mohan said, “These films can also go anywhere as they are working so hard on the content.”

Akshaye Rathi explained, “It depends on the response to their trailer. But then never say never.  You have big-ticket Shah Rukh Khan, Sunny Deol and Ranbir Kapoor starrers doing Rs. 500 crores, an actor like Rajkummar Rao crossing the mark with a franchise and now you also have a Vicky Kaushal coming in and crossing the mark with a non-franchise. Hence, it all depends on the merits of the film and the traction that it generates with the audience.”
