Disney Is Hoping to Break Its Box Office Hex With New Magical Movie Announcement

Disney has unveiled their next animated feature film, and it is an original idea. Even though Walt Disney Animation typically avoided sequels, the company has increased the number of sequels since the 2010s, with 2024’s Moana 2 being reworked from a Disney+ series into a feature film, following a string of original films like Strange World and Wish, which disappointed at the box office. The studio has Zootopia 2 set for a November 2025 release, and on the horizon are Frozen 3 and 4, but in 2026, Walt Disney Animation will release an original animated film.

During the Walt Disney Studios Showcase Presentation at the Destination D23 event at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, via What’s On Disney Plus, the studio announced its next animated film, Hexed. The film’s logline says Hexed will center on an “awkward teenage boy and his Type–A mom” who “discover that what makes him unusual, might just be magical powers that will turn their lives and a secret world of magic upside down.” The movie will be directed by Josie Trinidad and Jason Hand and is set for release on Nov. 25, 2026. Disney Animation’s Future

Disney has given Hexed the prime Thanksgiving weekend that the studio has saved for its animated films for over a decade. Hit films like Frozen 2, Encanto, and Moana 2 have all opened on the Thanksgiving weekend, and Disney is certainly hoping the same will happen for Zootopia 2 and Hexed. Hexed will now compete for family audiences during the holiday weekend frame with Warner Bros. Pictures The Cat in the Hat, which was recently pushed back to November 6, 2026. So far, the only other movie opening against Hexed is Focker-In-Law, the fourth entry in the Meet the Parents franchise.

Hexed is a much-needed original title for Disney’s 2026 film slate. The company has made significant investments in IP franchises over the past few years, with 2026 being no exception, as they have The Mandalorian & Grogu, Toy Story 5, and Avengers: Doomsday scheduled for release. However, Hexed and the Pixar animated film Hoppers, which opens in March 2026, show that Disney is still willing to invest in original concepts, at least in the realm of animation.

With Hexed being over a year from release, it will likely be some time until more details from the movie come out, or even who the voice cast will be. Yet it is an exciting addition to Disney’s slate, and its magical setting and concept art certainly imply a colorful and slightly spooky adventure, one that could grow to become a Halloween staple for younger audiences in the years that follow. Hexed could be the next big Disney franchise, like Frozen and Moana before it.
