Disney Releases Trailer for ‘A Goofy Movie’ Documentary to Celebrate 30 Year Anniversary

Disney+ is set to release a documentary about the making of A Goofy Movie

in honor of the film’s 30th anniversary. A Goofy Movie, which featured Goofy (Bill Farmer) and his son Max (Jason Marsden) going on a road trip to spend more time together, was a moderate box office hit but, in the years since, has become a cult classic, particularly as the young audience who saw it as kids have grown up. Now, fans are getting a comprehensive retrospective of the film in the Disney+ documentary Not Just a Goof.

Disney has officially released the official trailer for Not Just a Goof, the documentary that chronicles the making of The Goofy Movie. The film will take a look at the behind-the-scenes making of the 1995 animated film, its initial response and the larger cultural impact it has had in the 30 years since its release. Not Just a Goof will debut on Disney+ on April 7, 2025, thirty years to the date that A Goofy Movie opened in theaters back in 1995. Watch the trailer below:

The Legacy of ‘A Goofy Movie’

A Goofy Movie was a Disney animated film but not part of the official Walt Disney Animation Studios. Walt Disney Television Animation instead made it as a sequel to the popular syndicated animated series Goof Troop. The film was released between the box office juggernaut of The Lion King and Pocahontas. It was also released the same year as Pixar’s Toy Story, a groundbreaking, beloved animated movie that would change the medium forever. It seemed like A Goofy Movie was going to be a largely forgotten film, but in the spirit of past Disney films like Pinocchio and Fantasia, A Goofy Movie found a loyal audience and is now seen as a modern classic.

It is fitting that Disney is releasing Not Just a Goof as a way to celebrate the film’s 30th anniversary. In 2015, to celebrate A Goofy Movie‘s 20th anniversary, a special reunion screening was held at D23, Disney’s convention in Anaheim, California. What was initially intended to be a small panel soon became the largest panel at D23 that year, to everyone’s surprise. Around 1,000 fans attended the event, with many others turned away due to lack of seating. It is clear that the audience who saw A Goofy Movie as kids hold the film in high regard. Disney has since capitalized on the movie’s now adult fan base with plenty of merchandise centered around A Goofy Movie being sold at Disney theme parks and stores around the world.

Not Just a Goof is another in a long line of documentaries that Disney+ has released that take audiences behind the scenes of their favorite movies. Marvel Studios Assembled, Light & Magic, Howard, Timeless Hero: Indiana Jones and Harrison Ford, Music by John Williams, and Jim Henson: Idea Man are just a few of the great documentary series and movies to watch on Disney+ that capture the feeling of the great behind-the-scenes making of features that used to be a main selling point of home video releases. While other streaming services have seemingly phased out bonus feature material, it is great to see Disney+ putting out documentaries to show how these legendary projects were made and the people behind them.
