Dodgers Superstar, Shohei Ohtani, Is Allegedly A Big Country Music Fan

2 min

The best baseball player on the planet is a country music fan.

Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani will go down in the history books as one of baseball’s most talented phenoms. He’s a pitcher, he’s an unstoppable designated hitter, and he’s helped grow the popularity of the sport in numerous other countries outside of the United States.

If you like one of the other teams in the MLB other than the Dodgers, you probably know Ohtani better as the bane of your existence.

Ohtani has done some unbelievable things in the sport of baseball since he burst onto the scene in the late 2010s. Most recently, Shohei became the first player to reach base nine times in a single postseason game (Game 3 of the World Series that went 18 innings). The most a player had achieved prior? Three players had reached base six times… and that was the most that had ever been recorded postseason history.

The Dodgers are currently in quite the tilt with the Toronto Blue Jays with a World Series trophy on the line. Millions have tuned in to watch the heroics of Shohei Ohtani, all while his teammates always have a front row seat to witness greatness play out in real time.

One of those Dodgers teammates is Mookie Betts. He sat down with US Weekly last month and spoke about how Ohtani carries himself, and how refreshing it is that Shohei doesn’t make a big deal about his superstardom:

“He doesn’t have to be the first one to walk in everywhere. He lets other guys go. You would think he gets all of this special treatment, which he does. But not amongst us. When he’s amongst us, he just wants to fit in. He actually doesn’t like when we put him first. It’s really a breath of fresh air.

He’s really just a dude. A dude that is better than everybody. That’s pretty much what it is. He’s got the hunger, he’s got the fire. He’s a leader in his own right because he knows who he is and he knows what he has to do. He holds himself accountable to that.”

If you are reading this and consider yourself a “Sho-Hater,” maybe hearing that makes you feel a bit better about the two-way star.

Mookie Betts really wanted to hammer home the fact that Shohei Ohtani is very normal, even as he continues to ascend as a global, athletic superstar. So he opted to also share that Ohtani’s music taste might surprise some people. As it turns out, the Los Angeles Dodgers star pitcher and designated hitter is a fan of country music:

“He’s just a regular dude. He likes all different types of music — from country music to Latin music to K-pop. He’s humming all these songs. He knows all the words to a lot of these songs he’s listening to all the time.”

Sounds like his music taste has a wide breadth, but Mookie still pointed out that he likes country, so that must mean that Ohtani is playing it (and singing it) a lot of the time.

I just wish we could have gotten some specifics. Is Shohei into traditional country? How does he feel about Zach Top? Or Morgan Wallen? Does he lean more into the pop country side of things? That would be a shame, but good to know. Feels like we’ll just have to wait and see if he ever makes his walk up song a country music hit. Sadly, I’m not sure what he’d go with.

All I do know is that he won’t ever make Kenny Roger’s “The Gambler” his walk up song… if you know, you know.
