Dominic McLaughlin’s New Film Grow Pushed Back Because of Taylor Swift
The new Harry Potter lead star, Dominic McLaughlin, is set to make his acting debut in the upcoming comedy Grow. The comedy already had its world premiere at different film festivals, but was set to hit theaters on Oct. 3 in the U.S.
However, Deadline reports that Taylor Swift derailed the plans. The superstar is set to release her 12th studio album the same weekend, The Life of a Showgirl, which would also feature a behind-the-scenes movie, Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl, which is set to premiere the same weekend through AMC theaters. Because of the release, Dominic McLaughlin’s comedy, which is distributed in the U.S. by Fathom Entertainment, switched its release date from Oct. 3 to Oct. 17.
The upcoming comedy film will mark his first project with Nick Frost. The young actor and the comedian will work together on Harry Potter as well, as Frost is set to play fan-favorite character Hagrid in the upcoming HBO series. It also marks McLaughlin’s first acting role before becoming the Chosen One.
Grow also stars Jeremy Swift (Higgins from Ted Lasso), Priya-Rose Brookwell (The Lazarus Project), and Golda Rosheuvel (Queen Charlotte in Bridgerton). Anna and the Apocalypse director John McPhail was at the helm, directing from a script by Nick Guthe, Christos N. Gage, Ruth Fletcher Gage, Mark Huckerby, and Nick Ostler. Grow is described as an “exuberant tale full of giant pumpkins, madcap characters, and a little girl who just might be a pumpkin-growing savant.”
Grow had its world premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival on Aug. 16, before screenings at the Montreal International Film Festival and Canada International Children’s Film Festival later the same month. Fathom Entertainment is exclusively distributing Grow in the U.S. on Oct. 17.
Oct. 3 is a very packed weekend. Dwayne Johnson’s awards-buzzing biopic The Smashing Machine, Daniel Day-Lewis’ return to acting in his son’s film, Anemone, the horror mystery Bone Lake, the highly anticipated horror with the viral dog trailer, Good Boy, as well as the Avatar: The Way of Water re-release, are all set to hit theaters the same weekend, among other projects.

Swift announced the new movie, which has the pop superstar pairing directly with theater chains instead of opting for a distributor, on Sept. 19. Not long after, Deadline confirmed that the upcoming behind-the-scenes release party is projected to make huge numbers. In its opening day alone, tickets for the exclusive release racked up $15 million in the first 24 hours after tickets went on sale. Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl is expected to make between $30 million and $50 million, and will only be available the weekend between Oct. 3 and Oct. 5.
The same outlet mentioned that the ticket release sales marked AMC’s sixth-highest day of presales, making around $7.5 million.
Her previous theatrical release, the concert tour Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, was a massive success. The concert film grossed $180.8 million domestically and $267.1 million worldwide in 2023, with a net profit of around $172 million.
Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl hits theaters on Oct. 3, while Grow will premiere on Oct. 17.
