Downton Abbey star ‘sneaked in’ real-life family members to final film set
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is set to be released in cinemas this month, and one star has shared how they managed to bring their real-life relatives to the set
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale star Harry Hadden-Paton was accompanied by genuine family members on the set of the eagerly-awaited third and concluding film.
Numerous devotees of the phenomenally successful period drama are keenly anticipating the movie’s cinema release this month, which will bring the curtain down on the historical series 15 years after its debut on ITV.
The majority of the cherished cast will return for one final adventure, which will witness the Crawley family entering the 1930s whilst confronting a divorce scandal and the prospect of financial devastation.
Beloved star Harry Hadden-Paton will reprise his role as Herbert “Bertie” Pelham, 7th Marquess of Hexham, who disclosed that he and his on-screen spouse Lady Edith (portrayed by Laura Carmichael) aren’t enduring quite the same hardships as the remainder of the family.
Discussing their parts in the third film with the Radio Times, Hadden-Paton confessed the Pelhams won’t be encountering “trials and tribulations”, reports the Express.

He explains the couple will be in a “place of happiness”, whilst Carmichael notes Edith is “feeling her power” and “comfortable” in her role as a magazine editor.
Whilst visiting the film’s set, RT also observed Hadden-Paton’s sisters appearing in the background of a crucial scene.
He disclosed that Downton’s producers can be “very allowing” regarding having the stars’ friends and family appearing as extras and in minor parts.
The actor even arranged for his actual best man to assume the same position on screen when Bertie wed Lady Edith.
“Then, in series six, we had a big get-back-together scene at the Ritz, which we filmed in the middle of the night, and the entire Ritz dining room was comprised of crew in full make-up and costume pretending to be other diners,” he recalled.
“The producer was the maître d’! So the lines have sometimes been a bit blurred between real and fictional with these surreal celebrations.”

On this particular occasion, the cast were in their tenth week of shooting with just one final major sequence remaining to complete.
Since the scene required a substantial crowd of background performers, Hadden-Paton was permitted to “sneak in” his own relatives to participate in the festivities.
Whilst devotees will feel melancholy bidding farewell to Downton Abbey, screenwriter Julian Fellowes has confessed he cannot entirely dismiss the possibility of revisiting the series.
“Every time I say ‘never’ in this business, I find six months later, I’m doing exactly what I said I’d never do,” he teased.
Nevertheless, the actors portraying Edith and Bertie remain convinced their narrative has concluded, arguing it would be “too hard” to select particular characters to pursue in a spin-off.
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is in UK cinemas from Friday, 12th September.
