Drumming Up Innovation: Digital Ngoma Vol. 2 Bridges Mayotte’s Past and Future
Various Artists – Digital Ngoma Vol. 2 (Kayamba Records, 2025)
The second installment of Digital Ngoma, released by Kayamba Records, continues to explore the intersection of Mayotte’s traditional music and electronic music production. Following the success of the first volume in 2023, this compilation maintains its dual approach: tracks by emerging Mayotte-based artists appear alongside contributions from professional producers, including Bab, Loya, Praktika, and Sevenbeatz. These artists, who previously performed at Kayamba events, have also mentored local musicians through production workshops, fostering creative growth.

The compilation’s title pays homage to global anthologies such as Digital Zandoli, Digital Kabar, and Digital Indigenous, which highlight cultural heritage through modern reinterpretation. “Ngoma” refers to a family of drums and the dances they accompany, central to Mayotte’s celebrations and communal traditions. By integrating these elements into irresistible electronic music, Digital Ngoma contributes to preserving and promoting the island’s rich musical legacy.
Since 2021, the Kayamba festival has organized workshops in computer-assisted music, led by visiting artists like Deena Abdelwahed, Dom Peter, KasbaH, and BoogzBrown. This initiative has catalyzed a new wave of musical experimentation in Mayotte, bridging traditional sounds with contemporary production techniques. Digital Ngoma Vol. 2 is the culmination of these efforts: ten self-produced tracks that offer a fresh perspective on Mayotte’s musical identity at a time of increasing globalization and cultural standardization.
The project carries added significance in light of the devastation caused by Cyclone Chido in December 2024. A portion of the proceeds from release events in Mayotte, La Réunion, and Paris will support the rebuilding of master luthier Colo Assani’s workshop, which was destroyed in the storm.
