Dundalk Lions Club collected thousands of glasses for people in developing countries

The Dundalk Lion’s Club has collected thousands of spectacles which will be sent to people who need them in developing countries.

As part of the Recycle for Sight campaign Dundalk Lions collected around 3,000 old glasses and lenses which are boxed up and ready to go to France to be repaired before being sent to developing countries.

The Dundalk Lions said they wished to thank the local opticians, schools and individuals who have contributed to the campaign by donating old glasses and lenses and DPD for delivering them to France free of charge.

They are continuing to collect glasses and lenses which can be donated to collection boxes in the Long Walk Shopping Centre, Specsavers, Eimear Court, Market Square. Boyds and the Centra in Blackrock.

They can also be given to any member of Dundalk Lions.

According to the World Health Organisation 153 million people worldwide have uncorrected eyesight problems. Most of these impairments are reduced with corrective lenses.

Still millions of people in the developing world are pushed deeper into poverty because they don’t have glasses. This prevents people from getting education and employment.
