Education: The W hosts free summer science camp at Plymouth Bluff
COLUMBUS – Children with a passion for science and nature can look forward to an exciting opportunity this summer at the Plymouth Bluff Environmental Center, where Mississippi University for Women’s Department of Sciences and Mathematics will host a free, four-day Science Camp, from 8 a.m. to noon July 14-17.
“Our hope is to ignite curiosity and a lasting love for science in these young students,” said Michael Dodson, biology professor at The W. “By bringing STEM learning into a natural, hands-on environment, we’re creating a space where kids can truly explore and grow.”
Open to children ages 9 to 14, the camp is limited to 20 participants, and registration is open through May 15 or until slots are filled. Thanks to the generous support of The W and its donors, the camp is offered completely free of charge.
Campers will explore a variety of science and math disciplines through hands-on activities led by university faculty and student volunteers. Areas of study will include biology, chemistry, environmental science, geology, engineering and mathematics.
The program will be facilitated by W professors Dodson, Davida Crossley, Travis Hagey, Brian Burnes and Bonnie Oppenheimer.
Students will rotate through a series of exciting workshops and activities designed to promote curiosity and build foundational STEM skills.
Snacks such as fruit, vegetables, cookies and juice will be provided daily. Parents may also send a packed lunch to accommodate their child’s dietary needs. Water fountains are available on-site.
Last year’s program reached capacity before the registration deadline, so early registration is strongly encouraged. To register or for more information, visit muw.edu/sciencecamp. The registration deadline is May 15.
