Elon Musk’s Starlink to offer India data plans at similar rates as in Bangladesh

Elon Musk’s Starlink will offer unlimited data plans to consumers from a starting price of ₹3,000, while consumers will have to pay a one-time price of ₹33,000 for the company’s data receiver, CNBC Awaaz reported.

The satellite internet provider Starlink recently secured a crucial licence from India’s Ministry of Telecommunications, marking a significant step forward for the company’s plans to begin commercial operations in the country.

Starlink is the third company to have received approval from the Department of Telecommunications, following in the footsteps of Bharti Airtel’s OneWeb and Reliance Jio, both of which have already been cleared to offer satellite-based services in India.

The Elon Musk-owned enterprise recently launched its services in Bangladesh at a monthly cost of ₹3,000 and a one-time hardware fee of ₹33,000.

Ahead of starting commercial operations, the company needs to secure an authorisation from IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre). Moreover, Starlink will need to get spectrum allocation, and will have to establish ground infrastructure to kick-start operations in India.

Currently, no telecom service provider in India has either been allotted spectrum or has the requisite ground infrastructure.
