Equal Education calls for NFSAS to trace accommodation monies – SABC News
Equal Education has called on the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) to prioritise following up on money sent to accommodations.
This follows student protests about accommodation amongst other issues, that resulted in violence at the Walter Sisulu University in the Eastern Cape.
Equal Education’s Karabo Dala says NSFAS must be aware of what is happening at the accommodations they pay for as well as the state that the accommodations are in.
Dala says accommodation is a crisis throughout all universities in South Africa, emphasising that it is troubling for them to say NFSAS should not be involved as they are responsible for paying these accommodations using tax money.
“They should be aware of things that are happening and where they spend their money because when they pay for these accommodations, they need to make sure that students do get the facilities and the things that the accommodation mostly said they would provide for students,” says Dala.
