Ericsson announces job cuts as part of its cost-cutting strategy, follows Microsoft, TCS, Oracle, and others – Technology News
Ericsson has just announced layoffs in its Canadian division, just days after Oracle let go of thousands of its employees. The Swedish telecom company has initiated a new round of layoffs for its Canadian division, cutting approximately 100 technical jobs in Canada as part of a global restructuring effort. The layoff comes amid massive cost-cutting for the tech giant, especially since global investment in network technology has slowed down.
The affected employees, who usually consist of technicians and support staff within the Canadian network management services team, were notified of the company’s decision on Monday. The laid-off employees will serve the company until October 31, which gives them a buffer period to look for a job elsewhere or plan their next move.
Ericsson lays off 100 employees
The affected employees are expected to receive severance packages and career transition support, thus not letting them go through a disturbing phase. According to an Ericsson spokesperson, the layoffs are intended to “align the Canadian team with the company’s global operations, allowing it to leverage common tools, processes and scale.”
The latest round of job cuts is part of Ericsson’s ongoing strategy, which has been accelerated by low demand in North America. Major telecom carriers have pulled back on 5G network tech spending after years of heavy rollouts, thus impacting Ericsson’s key market.
The company had previously announced a plan in early 2023 to reduce its global headcount by around 8,500 employees. Ericsson’s second-quarter results for 2025 hinted that restructuring/layoffs would continue to help the company streamline its operations.
Ericsson joins the layoff list
Ericsson’s decision to let go of 100 employees comes on the heels of other big tech companies firing their human employees. Oracle had recently let go of 3,000 employees globally, which was just weeks after India’s Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) announced a mega layoff of almost 12,000 employees globally. Microsoft had also let go of its 9,000 employees from the Xbox and other divisions as well.
