EV sales rise to 1.79 lakh units in May 2025; electric two-wheelers lead with 56% share: Report, ET EnergyWorld
New Delhi: India recorded 1,79,522 electric vehicle (EV) registrations in May 2025, with high-speed electric two-wheelers (HS E2Ws) accounting for 55.85 per cent of the total, according to the monthly EV sales digest released by JMK Research.
Sales of high-speed electric two-wheelers rose by 9 per cent month-on-month to 1,00,266 units. TVS Motor Company led the HS E2W segment with a market share of 24.49 per cent, followed by Bajaj Auto with 21.71 per cent and Ola Electric with 18.45 per cent. Ather Energy and Hero MotoCorp registered market shares of 12.81 per cent and 7.14 per cent respectively.
Passenger electric three-wheelers (E3Ws) registered 55,623 units in May, reflecting a 6 per cent increase over April and an 18 per cent growth compared to May 2024. Mahindra Last Mile Mobility held the highest market share in this segment at 10.8 per cent, followed by Bajaj Auto with 10.55 per cent. TVS Motor Company, which entered the segment recently, posted a monthly growth rate of more than 30 per cent.
Sales of cargo E3Ws reached 10,394 units in May, up 5 per cent month-on-month and 34 per cent year-on-year. Mahindra topped this category with a 5.64 per cent market share. Saravana Engineering Works recorded the highest growth among original equipment manufacturers, with a 430 per cent increase in monthly sales.
Electric passenger vehicle (E-car) sales stood at 12,193 units in May. Tata Motors led the segment with a 35.42 per cent market share, followed by MG Motors at 30.61 per cent and Mahindra & Mahindra at 21.36 per cent. BYD reported a 42 per cent month-on-month growth in EV sales.
In the electric bus segment, 338 units were sold in May, marking a 19 per cent month-on-month and 48 per cent year-on-year growth. PMI Electro led the market with a 43.49 per cent share, followed by JBM Auto with 19.23 per cent and Olectra Greentech with 17.75 per cent.
Uttar Pradesh topped EV registrations among states with a 21.25 per cent share in May 2025, followed by Maharashtra (10.92 per cent), Karnataka (8.61 per cent), Tamil Nadu (6.57 per cent), and Delhi (5.65 per cent). The data was compiled from 1,385 Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across 35 states and union territories.
