Export Institute tasks FG on trade facilitation
Dele Ayemibo, President of the Institute of Export and International Trade (T.I.E.I.T)
…as ICC officials get chartered trade specialist recognition
Dele Ayemibo, President of the Institute of Export and International Trade (T.I.E.I.T) has urged the Nigerian Government to design and implement policies to further promote local and international trade among businesses and institutions.
Ayemibo spoke to BusinessDay during the International Chamber of Commerce, Nigeria’s meeting, hosted by Lotus in Lagos on Tuesday, where he decried the low level of trade among African countries, a development he linked to the absence of an enabling environment, logistics and infrastructure, even with the introduction of the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement.
This was as three senior executives of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Nigeria were conferred with the Honorary Chartered Trade Specialist (HCTS) designation, underscoring their contributions to trade facilitation and the development of Nigeria’s trade finance ecosystem.
Those conferred the honour include Omolara Akanji, Chairman of the ICC Nigeria Banking Commission, and her vice, Olu Vincent, as well as Olubunmi Osuntuyi, ICC Nigeria’s Secretary-General.
The conferment, according to Ayemibo, is in recognition of their leadership in strengthening policy advocacy, professional standards and capacity building across the Country’s banking and corporate trade community.
The HCTS designation, Ayemibo said, is reserved for individuals who demonstrate sustained impact in international trade and finance practice, including support for the adoption of global best practices, mentoring of practitioners and the expansion of knowledge networks.
Industry observers say the recognition reflects the growing role of Nigerian professionals in shaping discourse on trade finance, risk management and compliance in line with internationally accepted rules and guidelines.
As Secretary-General, Osuntuyi has led ICC Nigeria’s coordination with public and private stakeholders, promoting an enabling environment for cross-border commerce and dispute-avoidance frameworks.
Under the Banking Commission, chaired by Akanji with Vincent as vice chair, the Chamber has intensified outreach and technical programmes for banks, exporters, importers and service providers, fostering greater alignment with international standards and improving understanding of documentary credits, guarantees and supply chain finance instruments.
The conferment is expected to reinforce momentum behind ongoing initiatives aimed at reducing trade frictions, improving access to finance for small and medium-sized enterprises and deepening Nigeria’s integration into global value chains. It also signals recognition of collaborative efforts within ICC Nigeria to elevate skills and ethics among professionals who design, fund and secure trade transactions across sectors.
An investiture ceremony will be announced in due course.
