F1 Drivers Experience Private Screening of ‘F1: The Movie’ in Monaco

MONACO — Formula One drivers gathered for a private screening of “F1: The Movie” on Wednesday, offering them an exclusive glimpse of the film before its international release on June 25. The event took place ahead of the iconic Monaco Grand Prix weekend, allowing drivers to experience the finished product of a film that has been in the making for the past two years.

The movie, produced in collaboration with Apple, aims to provide an immersive look at the world of Formula One. Brad Pitt stars in the film, with drivers playing roles in staging certain scenes, even sharing podiums with the actor during last year’s events. Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, took an active role as a producer, ensuring the film’s accuracy, from engine sounds to racing details.

After watching, Hamilton expressed mixed emotions. “I was nervous… everyone is seeing it for the first time,” he said. Post-screening, he reached out to fellow drivers for their feedback, hoping for honest critiques. “There’s definitely parts you’ll notice might not align with reality, but the sound and imagery are incredible,” he noted.

Other drivers such as Esteban Ocon shared their thoughts on the film, acknowledging its artistic liberties while still praising the overall accuracy. Carlos Sainz remarked, “There were a couple of icks, but honestly, not so many as I expected. This is Hollywood after all.” Drivers like Liam Lawson emphasized the movie’s immersive quality, saying it captures the essence of being in Formula One.

Some prominent drivers were notably absent from the screening, like reigning champion Max Verstappen, who opted for family time as he welcomed his daughter earlier in May. He stated he plans to eventually catch the film upon its release, adding that he has heard positive reviews. Meanwhile, Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll missed the event due to scheduling conflicts but intends to see it soon.

The film capitalizes on the excitement generated by the sport’s increasing popularity, reminiscent of how Netflix’s “Drive to Survive” attracted new fans. Its aim is to depict the life of drivers accurately while engaging a wider audience. As Sainz reflected, a survey conducted among non-F1 fans post-screening indicated that every participant expressed interest in watching a race after viewing the film.

As the Monaco Grand Prix approaches, the excitement surrounding “F1: The Movie” adds another layer of anticipation to the weekend’s activities. The film’s immersive portrayal may just help push Formula One’s appeal to new heights.
