Fair trade wind conditions for Monday
Moderate to locally breezy trade winds will bring a few showers for windward and mauka areas Monday. A plume of moisture will increase those showers for East Maui and East Hawaii Island on Tuesday and could make for damp end to the old year Tuesday night. Drier conditions are expected again for the first day of the new year on Wednesday, although Kauai’s windward side could still see a few more showers.
Looking ahead, we have a First Alert for lighter winds again near the end of the week. Light east to southeast winds are expected for the western half of the state Friday, while the eastern half will have breezier east-southeasterlies. Winds are expected to become rather light on the weekend, which could increase the amount of volcanic haze over the state if the current eruption is still ongoing at that time.
Surf is quieting down this week, with the next northwest swell expected to bring advisory level surf Thursday and Thursday night for north and west shores of most of the smaller islands. South and east shore surf will remain small through the week.
