TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Family Service & Guidance Center and Valeo Behavioral Health Care announced their merger and a new logo during a Monday morning news conference in Topeka.

The combined agencies will now be known as Astra Mental Health & Recovery.

“It mimics kind of our state motto, ‘to the stars through difficulties,’” said Valeo Interim CEO Christine Wills. “I think that just kind of helps with Astra that we’re here to help people in mental health recovery.”

“The coming together of our organizations to be more efficient,” said Family Service & Guidance Center CEO Kathy Mosher. “Better access, Better quality, and better outcomes.”

The agency’s new logo and tagline – “Healing within reach” – were also shared publicly for the first time.

The merger announcement was made during a 10 a.m. event at the Sunflower Foundation Powerhouse Conference Center at 5820 S.W. 6th Ave.

According to a news release, Family Service & Guidance Center and Valeo have combined to serve northeast Kansas for nearly 180 years.

In February 2025, the Family Service & Guidance Center and the Valeo boards of directors approved plans to merge the two organizations.

The merger will form a single certified community behavioral health clinic in Topeka that provides programs and services to people across the lifespan without duplication. The merger becomes effective January 1, 2026.

Valeo Behavioral Health Care was founded in 1967 and employs 360 individuals. Family Service & Guidance Center was established in 1904 and currently has 360 employees. The combined organizations provided mental health and substance use treatment to over 11,600 individuals in 2024.

Following the merger announcement, the Association of Community Mental Health Centers of Kansas was scheduled to convene a town hall meeting.

During the town hall, officials were scheduled to discuss “emerging issues and trends in mental health service delivery, as well as how community mental health centers are ensuring access to high-quality care.”

“It’s an opportunity for them to be familiar with their same therapist,” said Association of Community Mental Health Centers of Kansas Executive Director Kyle Kessler. “It increases efficiencies and reduces redundancies in a way that’s consistent with providing the best and highest quality of health care.”
