Fans Won’t Recognize Timothee Chalamet ‘At All’ With His Transformative Role in Next Movie
Fresh off the success of his Oscar-nominated role of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, Timothée Chalamet is set to appear as table tennis legend Marty Reisman in Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme. The film’s cinematographer, Darius Khondji, recently revealed that audiences won’t recognize Chalamet “at all” in the film and also provided some insight into how hard the rising star actor worked to bring Reisman to the big screen.
Speaking with Variety, Khondji revealed that Chalamet, who famously spent years preparing to play the iconic folk singer Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown, used the same work ethic for his role of real-life table tennis legend Marty Reisman in A24’s Marty Supreme. “He wanted to be like a real [professional] ping pong player when he started shooting,” Knondji said. Marty Supreme won’t be a conventional biopic, instead, it will be loosely based on the life of Marty Resiman, the table tennis legend who won 22 major ping pong championships throughout his career. However, that didn’t stop Chalamet from wanting to prepare as best he could to portray Reisman because, according to Knondji, Chalamet was on set with “some of the greatest real ping pong champions playing today.”

Gwyneth Paltrow has “a lot” of sex scenes with Timothee Chalamet in Marty Supreme, and she talks about working with the film’s intimacy coordinator.
Khondji would further add that Chalamet’s performance in Marty Supreme will be completely different from what audiences are used to from the young actor, saying he “is going to be very different than the Timothée Chalamet you’ve seen so far.”
I don’t think people are going to recognize him at all.
“I don’t think people are going to recognize him at all,” Khondji added. While there still has yet to be a trailer for Marty Supreme, set photos showcasing Chalamet’s transformation into Reisman were released last year, which shows the acclaimed actor sporting a pencil-thin mustache and era-appropriate clothing. Audiences will get a chance to see Chalamet in Marty Supreme when it lands in theaters on Christmas Day.
Who Else Stars in Marty Supreme?
Chalamet will be front and center in Marty Supreme, but he will be joined by a star-studded cast that includes Gwyneth Paltrow (Iron Man), Tyler, the Creator (Piece by Piece), Fran Drescher (Hotel Transylvania), Kevin O’Leary (Grace and Frankie), Odessa A’zion (Hellraiser), Penn Jillette (Director’s Cut), Abel Ferrara (Ms. 45), Sandra Bernhard (The King of Comedy), and Spenser Granese (The Wolf of Wall Street). In addition to directing the film, Safdie also co-wrote the script alongside Ronald Bronstein, who worked with Safdie previously on Uncut Gems and Good Time.
