KUCHING (June 12): Sports consultant Dr Mohd Shafiq Abdullah will challenge Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman for the presidency of the Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) at its upcoming annual general meeting (AGM) this Saturday.
The race for the top post was confirmed following the decision by incumbent president Abang Zulkarnain Abang Abdul Rahman not to seek re-election after completing his 2023/2024 term.
Dr Mohd Shafiq, a former deputy president of the Samarahan Division Football Association (2006–2009), is a seasoned figure in the football and sports development scene.
With over two decades of experience spanning grassroots, junior, and professional levels, he brings a strong track record in strategic sports management and cross-border collaboration.
“It is important to recognise the dynamic nature of the sports within the football ecosystem.
“My focus must be on setting a clear direction for achieving football excellence. This includes enhancing success through sports science, data-driven management, and technology.
“The goal is to manage football comprehensively: generating revenue, creating developmental programs, and contributing economic growth,” he said in a statement.
With a deep understanding of the cultural, social, and economic significance of football, Dr Mohd Shafiq said he would continue to champion its development as a powerful tool for unity, identity, and progress in Sarawak and beyond.
The FAS AGM will also witness 12 candidates contesting for six key positions in the state’s football governing body.
For the post of deputy president, incumbent Abang Suhordie Abang Zaini will face a challenge from Datuk Hamzah Brahim in a two-man race.
Meanwhile, eight candidates are vying for the four vice-president positions. Among them are current officeholders Nicol Agoi, Khairulddin Qalam Daud, and Khairul Anuar Adeni. The remaining five candidates are Phillip Jabu, Sophie Shariee, Mohd Saif Jubaidi, Md Haical Abdullah, and Dr Kamurudin Ahmed Junaidi.
