A spine-chilling masterpiece of gothic suspense makes its return to TV tonight – and audiences continue to hail it as “exceptional”, “mind twisting,” and “the best suspense movie of all time.”

This eerie psychological horror from 2001 demonstrated Nicole Kidman’s unparalleled ability to captivate viewers.

Penned and helmed by Alejandro Amenábar, the Spanish director behind Open Your Eyes and The Sea Inside, the story takes place in an isolated country manor on the island of Jersey, in the aftermath of the Second World War.

Kidman portrays Grace Stewart, a deeply religious mother caring for her two light-sensitive youngsters – portrayed by Alakina Mann and James Bentley – in almost complete darkness.

Grace maintains rigid regulations within the home: no door may be opened before the previous one is shut, and every curtain must stay closed to shield her children from daylight, reports the Express.

However, when three new servants turn up, peculiar events begin to disturb the family.

The sound of footsteps rings out in vacant chambers, piano melodies drift through the air when nobody is present, and Grace grows convinced the property is haunted – yet the reality, as becomes apparent, is considerably more unsettling.

Filmed in Spain with painstaking period accuracy, The Others employs its mist-shrouded location and candlelit rooms to build a gradual, mounting dread instead of depending on bloodshed or sudden frights. “This movie is really amazing and has a mind twisting plot,” wrote one fan on Rotten Tomatoes, while another praised it as “a slow-burn spooky ghost film with a great twist since The Sixth Sense… Nicole Kidman does an incredible, strong leading performance and the cinematography looks gorgeously gothic.”

Kidman’s turn in the film is widely considered amongst her very best work – composed, gripping, and deeply moving as Grace’s beliefs start to crumble.

“Exceptional performances by Nicole Kidman and her children,” one viewer noted.

“This might be my favourite of her movies that I grew up with. The thing that stands out is how well the misdirection is executed.”

Reviewers at the time were similarly bowled over.

The picture scooped eight Goya Awards – Spain’s answer to the Oscars – including Best Film and Best Director, and it stands as one of the rare English-language productions ever to claim that accolade.

Kidman also landed BAFTA and Golden Globe nods for her portrayal.

More than two decades on, The Others continues to captivate fresh viewers.

“My favourite horror movie ever,” another fan wrote.

“One of the biggest twists I never saw coming.”

The Others will be on BBC2 tonight at 11pm.
