FC Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is ready to ‘go to war’ with the club over his potential exit according to SPORT, which cited anonymous sources.

The German has seen himself go from being an ‘untouchable’ captain and first choice shotstopper in Blaugrana to a figure that missed most of 2024/2025 through injury, lost his place in the starting XI, and is now being pushed out of the fold.

That’s not just because of how much Wojciech Szczesny impressed when called out of retirement, once Ter Stegen suffered what was expected to be a season-ending injury in September.

It’s also thanks to the expected rival of 2024/2025 breakout star Joan Garcia, whose $28.5 million (€25 million) release clause Barca is expected to trigger in the coming days after reportedly agreeing terms with a current Espanyol player about to cross the city to the Pericos’ bitter rival.

RAC1 has already reported that Barca President Joan Laporta has told members of the board Ter Stegen must be sold if Garcia arrives, and the veteran claimed this was news to him while on international duty for Germany last weekend.

“No one has told me about this, so I don’t know the situation,” Ter Stegen stated from a press conference.

“I’m not worried. I know that I will be at Barcelona next year,” he added. “If I remember correctly, and if no news has happened in the last few hours, we only have two goalkeepers for next season, Inaki [Pena] and me,” he added.

This weekend, a report from SPORT explained how head coach Hansi Flick and his staff were angered by Ter Stegen’s attitude when he returned from injury and the way he tried to force his way into the first XI for Barca’s Champions League semifinal second leg defeat to Inter Milan at the San Siro.

Next week, it’s likely that we’ll see Garcia’s transfer announced while the same newspaper says that the first round of talks to “define the departure of Marc-Andre ter Stegen from Barca” will begin.

Sporting Director Deco will explain the club’s decision to the German and his camp and will try to negotiate the “best exit for all parties”, though the Portuguese is aware that it’s going to be “difficult to find a solution”.

Ter Stegen is reportedly “ready to go to war”. Angry that there have been leaks to the press, he also doesn’t appreciate the pressure that is being put on him to leave through the back door of a club where he’s been since 2014.

From a sporting perspective, he feels recovered from his injury and ready to battle Garcia and ‘Tek’ for the number one goalkeeper spot under Flick. He wants to put himself in the reckoning to enjoy the same standing in the German national team too, when it comes to representing the four-time winner at the 2026 World Cup in North America next year.

Ter Stegen is under no obligation to leave FC Barcelona

Above all, Ter Stegen is under no obligation to leave FC Barcelona because of boasting a contract that expires on June 30, 2028. At the same time, however, rotting on the bench does his World Cup chances no favours.
