FCT submits bid to host 2028 National Sports Festival
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has officially submitted a bid to host the 2028 edition of the National Sports Festival, marking what would be the third time the capital city would stage the prestigious multi-sport event, having previously hosted in 2004 and 2018.
It was gathered that the bid comes on the heels of major developments within the FCT’s sports infrastructure, including the recent award of contracts for the comprehensive renovation of sporting facilities and the construction of a brand-new sports centre in the city.
According to sources, the Minister of the FCT has directed that key facilities such as the Area 10 Old Parade Ground and the Area 3 Football Field undergo complete overhauls to meet international standards.
However, there is still uncertainty surrounding the fate of the six mini-stadiums located in the FCT’s Area Councils.
These facilities, built by past administrations, have long been abandoned and were not clearly mentioned in the latest renovation plans. Over time, this neglect has shifted sporting focus primarily to the Area 3 pitch, which remains the most active venueThe upcoming 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival is scheduled to be held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, in May 2025.
First launched in 1973 in Lagos, the festival is Nigeria’s biggest sporting event, often referred to as the country’s version of the Olympic Games. It is designed to foster national unity and serve as a platform for discovering and nurturing sports talents across the country. (Exclusivenews.com.ng)
