Federal government says it will firmly support canola producers, workers, exporters

MANINDER Sidhu, federal Minister of International Trade, and Heath MacDonald, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, on Tuesday today said that Canada is deeply disappointed with China’s decision to implement provisional anti-dumping duties in its self-initiated investigation into imports of canola seed from Canada.

China announced a preliminary anti-dumping duty on imports of canola seed from Canada of 75.8%, which will enter into force on August 14.

The ministers said: “We do not dump canola. Our hard-working farmers provide world-class food to Canadians and international trading partners. Canadian canola products meet the highest standards, and our inspection systems are robust. Canada is committed to ensuring fair market access for our canola industry and we remain ready to engage in constructive dialogue with Chinese officials to address our respective trade concerns.”

They noted: “While China remains Canada’s largest export market for canola after the United States, Canadian exports to other markets, including the European Union, the United Arab Emirates, Japan and Mexico, have increased in 2025.”

Sidhu and MacDonald said: “We are steadfast in our commitment to defend and diversify Canadian trade and we will stand shoulder-to-shoulder in our support for Canada’s hard-working canola producers, workers and exporters.

“As the Prime Minister highlighted last week, Canada’s new government is developing a comprehensive industrial strategy that will help our businesses retool and reinvest to protect Canadian jobs, to build Canadian competitiveness, to meet growing demand in Canada and to develop new opportunities with international trading partners.”
