Ferrari Approved Used Car Programme: Second Coming
Ferrari has a factory-backed programme that makes buying a used Ferrari worry-free, and we find out how.
On the hallowed ground of Ferrari’s test track at Fiorano stands Enzo Ferrari’s iconic red-and-white building, the backdrop to all of Ferrari’s latest models. Yet, on this particular day, the car on display is nothing new. In fact, it’s actually old – or rather, proudly used – and that is the whole point of the line-up of cars I’m going to be driving for the rest of the day.
Welcome to Ferrari Approved, the Italian sports car maker’s official and comprehensive pre-owned car programme that aims to make Ferraris even more accessible.
Let’s be honest: Ferraris are becoming ludicrously expensive, and Ferrari knows that, too. Which is why the next best thing to a new Ferrari is a pre-owned one. Or is it? Without knowing the service history, if there are hidden repairs, or if the car has been thrashed within an inch of its life, you could end up buying a white horse – err, elephant – and your dream could quickly turn into a nightmare. That’s where Ferrari Approved comes in, offering that much-needed peace of mind: the assurance that what you’re buying will not only keep your money safe but might even help it appreciate.
Meticulous checks
Over 200 checks bring every used Ferrari as close to factory-fresh as possible.
At the heart of the Ferrari Approved programme lies a meticulous and exhaustive process. As Andrea Scioletti, head of Ferrari Approved, passionately explains, a Ferrari is “a product that has been created to last forever. It’s a masterpiece, like a piece of art.” More than 90 percent of all Ferraris ever built are still on the road – an astonishing statistic that speaks volumes about the brand’s durability and craftsmanship.
To uphold this legacy, every car entering the programme undergoes over 200 technical checks. These aren’t quick inspections – they’re deep dives into everything: powertrain, electronics, bodywork and interior. “We are verifying that all parts of the vehicle are original and consistent with the original production,” Scioletti emphasises. Any defective or non-compliant part is replaced with genuine Ferrari components, bringing the car as close as possible to factory-fresh condition.

The car’s provenance and maintenance history are thoroughly checked too, guarding against tampered odometers or hidden damage. And when it comes to modifications, Ferrari is strict: “If there are modifications on the vehicles, we reject them. Unless, for example, you have a non-original exhaust – so to become approved and certified, you must revert to the original,” says Scioletti. This commitment to authenticity keeps the soul of every Ferrari intact.
Proof on the road
The real test, of course, is how these cars drive, and two examples were ready: the Ferrari 296 GTB and the SF90 Stradale. Neither is new; the 296 GTB has 13,000 kilometres on the clock, while the SF90 – a 1,000hp hybrid – has done over 28,000km. But if these cars have been driven the way Ferraris should be, every kilometre was likely memorable.
Behind the wheel of the 296 GTB, the car feels remarkably fresh. Even on a damp track, its sweet handling and the hybrid V6’s evocative roar prove this is still every inch a Ferrari. Then comes the SF90: the instant torque from its hybrid powertrain hurls it forward, easily topping 200kph on Fiorano’s short straights. Despite the mileage, it feels every bit as sharp and exhilarating as a brand-new car.
Roma restored to look factory-fresh.
A pre-owned Roma, painted in a stunning shade of blue, was also waiting for a quick run through the hills behind Fiorano. It feels tight, solid, and impressively refined – no rattles, no squeaks. Notably, older Ferraris had a reputation online for “melting” buttons and sticky plastics in hot climates like India, but here, every click of the Manettino and flick of the indicator feels reassuringly crisp.
Beyond the badge
Ferrari Approved’s promise goes further than mechanical checks. Cars come with a comprehensive warranty – typically 24 months in major markets like Europe, the USA, the Middle East, and China, and 12 months elsewhere, including India. This covers major repairs and genuine parts, all fitted by Ferrari-trained technicians. Owners also get 24-hour roadside assistance for added peace of mind.

Personalisation is encouraged too, though within limits: while major structural changes are off-limits, owners can choose from official accessories, like carbon-fibre interior elements or new alloy wheel designs, to keep their Ferrari unique.
Perhaps the most forward-looking part of the programme tackles a big concern often raised online: hybrid battery life. Ageing batteries and fast-evolving tech have historically hurt hybrid supercars’ resale values. Ferrari’s answer? A dedicated warranty guaranteeing battery replacement at the 8th and even the 16th year of ownership. And not just with the same pack – the battery is replaced with “the most advanced technology available at the time,” ensuring performance stays sharp or even improves. It’s a clever step to keep hybrid Ferraris desirable well into the future.
More than a sale
Used SF90 at Fiorano track felt every bit as sharp and exhilarating as a brand-new car.
The Ferrari Approved programme is enforced globally through the brand’s official dealer network. Mechanics undergo specialist training to carry out the extensive refurbishments – mechanical, electronic, interior and aesthetic – needed for certification. This means a Ferrari Approved car bought in India meets the same exacting standards as one sold in Italy.
But beyond warranties and checks, Ferrari Approved serves a deeper purpose. As Scioletti says, it’s “very often the way to enter the Ferrari community.” For many, it’s the first and most attainable step into the world of Maranello – and demand is growing. Most cars in the programme are modern models under 15 years old with fewer than 1,20,000 kilometres, but no single model dominates.
The aim is simple: to show that pre-owned doesn’t mean second best. Instead, it means a more accessible way to experience the thrill, prestige and peace of mind that only Ferrari – and Maranello – can offer.

Beyond the peace of mind, what kind of personalisation can a customer expect with a Ferrari Approved vehicle?
Even with a pre-owned car, personalisation is important. While major structural changes aren’t permitted, we offer a significant range of original accessories. Owners can choose new alloy wheel designs or replace certain interior carbon fibre elements. We’ve even developed a specific configurator for genuine accessories, allowing clients to visualise these options during the pre-owned sales process. This ensures that even a pre-owned Ferrari can still be tailored to an owner’s individual taste, reflecting that deep connection our clients have with their cars.
With more hybrid Ferraris on the market, how does Ferrari Approved address long-term usability and value concerns for these models, particularly regarding battery technology?
It’s a critical area we’ve focused on. For hybrid vehicles, our Approved program provides a dedicated warranty, which guarantees battery replacement at eight or even 16 years. Crucially, the replacement battery will always incorporate the most advanced technology available at that specific time. This ensures the car maintains its original performance characteristics throughout its life. For example, a LaFerrari’s battery could be replaced with technology from an F80. This commitment is vital for supporting the residual value of our hybrid Ferraris, addressing any owner concerns about future battery availability or technological shifts and ensuring continued driving pleasure.
For owners of “modern classics” (Ferraris 20+ years old), what kind of factory or dealer support can they expect through the classic certification program, especially for parts sourcing?
For cars over 20 years old, we have the Classic Certification program. Our dealers have trained personnel to gather the necessary information and photos, which are then submitted to the factory for evaluation. Ferrari then makes the final decision on certification, sometimes involving a physical inspection for very old models. Regarding parts for these older classics, it can be challenging, but for cars of very high value, we can actually reproduce components based on original drawings to maintain authenticity. This dedication helps keep these truly special cars running and appreciated for generations.
