FESTin – Itinerant Portuguese Language Film Festival kicks off today
‘The Noise of the Night’ is the debut film by actress and director Eva Pereira, opening the 16th edition of the festival at City Campo Pequeno cinema. This festival, showcasing films from Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, and Cape Verde, will run for one week.
The film is part of the fiction feature competition, which also includes the Portuguese movie ‘Idol Makers’ by Luís Diogo, offering “a reflective approach to the cult of fame, the backstage of the cultural industry, and the construction of public figures.”
In the documentary competition, Brazilian films predominate such as ‘Funk Favela’ by Kenya ZanattaI. Also included are ‘Nteregu,’ a Portuguese production by Manuel Loureiro and Roger Mo about the history of music in Guinea-Bissau, and ‘African Beauty’ (Angola/Mozambique/Portugal) by Coréon Dú and Nataniel Mangue.
Notably included, outside the competition, are films like ‘Doce de Mãe’ (2012) by Ana Luiza Azevedo and Jorge Furtado, starring Fernanda Montenegro, and ‘Cancer with Virgo Ascendant’ by Rosane Svartman, featuring Suzana Pires, Marieta Severo, and Nathália Costa.
Alongside film screenings, FESTin will hold several debates with industry professionals, such as a session on Thursday with representatives from the film institutes of Portugal, Brazil, and Cape Verde, “to discuss public policies, partnerships, challenges, and opportunities.”
The Graça Brandão Gallery will host a video art exhibition, ‘Confluent Territories,’ curated by visual artists César Meneghetti and Miguel Petchkovsky, featuring “short works by artists from Portuguese-speaking countries” until the end of the month.
The FESTin, concluding on the 8th, will have programming at City Campo Pequeno cinema, Forum Lisbon, Camões High School, and at Avenidas, as part of the Um Teatro em cada Bairro network.
