Far fewer people from India, Britain and Poland are interested in coming to work in the Netherlands, the Financieele Dagblad has reported, quoting research by online jobs site Indeed.
The website tracks the number of clicks job adverts attract from different countries. It found that while the Netherlands remains popular with people from Belgium, Germany and Spain, interest from there has declined.
The biggest drop, 48%, is in interest from India, where many of the country’s IT workers traditionally come from. The number of British visitors clicking on jobs in the Netherlands is down 40%, and from Poland 32%.
Indeed suggests a number of reasons for the downturn. For example, employers must comply with more regulations, such as the crackdown on sham self-employment. This means they must offer formal contracts to some workers who would previously have been self-employed.
The discussion about changes to the 30% ruling, which allows some foreign workers to receive 30% of their salary tax-free, has also played a role, Indeed is quoted as saying.
The difficulty in finding housing, high costs and political uncertainty are all contributing factors as well.
There has been an increase in interest from some countries, particularly the Philippines and Indonesia, especially for jobs in construction, healthcare, farming and domestic help.
