Fifty-five newly-appointed guest faculty to join duty today in 14 government arts and science colleges in Coimbatore region
Fifty-five guest faculty have been posted for vacancies in government arts and science colleges in Coimbatore region, during a recent recruitment drive.
The recruitment was conducted for 575 guest faculty vacancies in 180 government arts and science colleges across the State.
Classes for first-year UG students began on June 30 and for PG students the classes commenced on August 20.
The 55 vacancies were filled in 14 out of 22 arts and science colleges in Coimbatore region that has jurisdiction over Erode, Tiruppur and the Nilgiris districts.
According to official sources, five regular faculty were appointed to the newly-started Government Arts and Science College, Coonoor, earlier this year. Three teachers were deputed from the Government Arts and Science College (Autonomous), Coimbatore, and two from the Government Arts and Science College, Udhagamandalam.
The newly-appointed guest faculty are expected to join duty on September 8 (Monday). The vacancies caused by retirement of regular faculty over the years far outnumber the extent filled in the recent exercise.
According to teacher associations, as many as 9,000 vacancies need to be filled in the 180 government arts and science colleges across Tamil Nadu.
The move for appointment of 4000 Assistant Professors to the vacancies initiated last year was obstructed by legal wrangle. Legal intervention to resolve seniority is not over in the appointment of principals in 96 government arts and science colleges as well. In-charge principals have been appointed on deputation basis in these colleges.
According to Tamil Nadu Government College Teachers’ Association (TNGCTA) sources, the teaching-learning situation in the colleges in rural parts due to inadequacy of faculty remains a cause for concern. The number of guest faculty far outnumber those in regular posting in these colleges. Yet, several vacancies have to be filled, a college head said.
