Finance Minister visits Roi Et to advance Phase 2 of national debt relief program
Deputy PM Pichai Chunhavajira meets thousands in Roi Et for the rollout of a debt relief and skills development program aimed at empowering small-scale borrowers and revitalizing the rural economy.
ROI ET, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira visited Roi Et province on May 3 to review the progress of the government’s debt relief program for small-scale borrowers. Accompanied by Prime Minister’s Office Minister Jiraporn Sindhupra, the delegation visited Chaturaphak Phiman Ratchadapisek School, where over 4,000 participants gathered for the Phase 2 rollout of the scheme.
The “Debt Moratorium and Capacity-Building Program for Debtors” offers temporary financial relief alongside training designed to support long-term income generation. The visit provided an opportunity for government leaders to connect directly with local communities and reinforce implementation efforts on the ground.
Educational and career development activities were also organized during the visit, including the presentation of scholarships, grants to legal entities, and the donation of computers to the school. Support was provided by the Government Savings Bank and the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, as part of their continued backing of education and rural development.
During discussions with local farmers, Pichai highlighted the importance of bolstering the agricultural sector through practical support, stressing the need for improved access to water and affordable fertilizers to help drive sustainable recovery and economic resilience in the Northeast.
The debt moratorium is expected to help borrowers build financial independence through skills training and career development. The program will continue in phases, with its impact carefully monitored to ensure meaningful improvement in household stability. (NNT)
