Finecut Strikes Distribution Deals for Acclaimed South Korean Films at Cannes, Showcasing Hong Sangsoo’s Latest Masterpiece

by Murat Karul

Finecut, a sales company based in Seoul, has successfully finalized a series of agreements for the latest works of Hong Sangsoo, South Korea’s most prolific filmmaker. The highly anticipated film, titled “In Our Day,” is set to close the Directors’ Fortnight section at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival on May 25.

It has already secured distribution deals in several territories, including France (Capricci), Spain (L’Atalante Cinema), and Greece (Ama Films). “In Our Day” weaves a captivating narrative around a woman in her 40s, temporarily residing at a friend’s house, and a solitary man in his 70s, both of whom receive unexpected visitors with weighty inquiries.

Hong Sangsoo’s second most recent creation, “In Water,” premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in February and has also generated significant interest at the Cannes Marché du Film. The movie has successfully secured distribution in France (Arizona Films Distribution), Spain (L’Atalante Cinema), and Taiwan (COLA FILMS), in addition to its earlier acquisition by The Cinema Guild for North American distribution.

Furthermore, Finecut has closed deals for three films by talented young female Korean directors. July Jung’s “Next Sohee,” which premiered at the Cannes Critics Week in 2022, has secured distribution in Australia (SBS), China (BlueMedia Times), and Spain (La Aventura Cine). The film had previously been acquired by France (Arizona), India (Pictureworks), Japan (Rights Cube), Taiwan (Sky Films), and Switzerland (Trigon Film). Notably, “Next Sohee” premiered in France on April 5, amassing an impressive 90,000 admissions.

“Greenhouse,” directed by Lee Sol-hui, garnered multiple awards at the Busan Film Festival last year and has now secured distribution in France (Art House Films), Japan (Mimosa Films), and Taiwan (AV-Jet).

Lastly, Plaion Pictures has acquired the German-speaking rights to “The Hill of Secrets” directed by Lee Ji-eun, which premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival. This compelling film had previously been sold to Hong Kong’s Edko Films and Taiwan’s AV-Jet.
