A statement from the studio released via Instagram reads, “Hello Hollywood… [Hello Kitty] is coming to theaters July 21, 2028! The film marks Hello Kitty’s Hollywood theatrical debut as Hello Kitty and her friends embark on a cinematic adventure sure to delight audiences of all ages.”
The Hello Kitty film from Warner Bros. Animation and New Line Cinema is being directed by Leo Matsuda, with Wicked scribe Dana Fox handling the latest draft of the film’s screenplay. The movie is being produced by FlynnPictureCo., with Shelby Thomas overseeing the project on the company’s behalf. Reportedly, Beaugh Flynn spent almost a decade in talks with Sanrio founder Shintaro Tsuji in an effort to acquire the rights to Hello Kitty for the project.
First seen on a line of coin purses in 1974, Hello Kitty quickly became Sanrio’s most beloved mascot in the decades that followed, adorning countless pieces of merchandise. In the early ’90s, Hello Kitty went from being a local favorite to a truly global sensation, exploding in popularity alongside many other characters from Sanrio’s expansive stable of mascots, such as Cinnamoroll and Kuromi. Hello Kitty has since headlined dozens of video games, animated specials, made-for-television shorts, and cartoon series, not to mention being featured across a myriad of media and merchandise crossovers with other popular brands and IPs.
Despite Hello Kitty’s continued presence in the realm of pop culture, she is far from the most popular Sanrio character today. In fact, many of Hello Kitty’s adorable friends have gone on to overshadow her in the modern era, and Sanrio has taken note of these developments. Earlier this month, Sanrio Chief Operating Officer Silvia Figini explained that the company commissions “brand research to measure Sanrio’s market share and evaluate Sanrio’s characters’ performance against competitors and other intellectual properties.” Figini added, “Compared with other data, our recent poll results accurately reflected how the community currently interacts with our characters. The poll also gave us confidence that, in the coming years, characters like My Melody, Kuromi, Pompompurin and Cinnamoroll will continue to grow in popularity.”
Hello Kitty arrives in theaters on July 21, 2028.
