Flat May for car sales as dealer dispatches inch up just 0.1% – Car News
India’s passenger vehicle (PV) wholesales saw a slight 0.1% increase in May 2025, reaching 352,000 units, indicating subdued market sentiment as retail sales dropped by 1% year-on-year.
Passenger vehicle wholesales saw a marginal uptick of just 0.1% in May, reaching 352,000 units, according to industry sources. The figure, which represents dispatches from manufacturers to dealerships, signals a subdued market as retail sales were down 1% year-on-year, reflecting weak consumer sentiment despite expectations of a pre-monsoon boost. Although Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor did not release their individual numbers on Sunday, the industry-wide tally includes their internal dispatch estimates.
Among the companies that reported data, Mahindra & Mahindra led the growth charts with a strong 21% rise in domestic utility vehicle sales to 52,431 units in May, up from 43,218 units a year ago. “Thanks to continued demand for our products, we were able to deliver industry-leading growth across our ICE and BEV portfolio,” said Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO, automotive division, M&M.
The company also saw its domestic tractor sales rise to 38,914 units from 35,237 units last year. Veejay Nakra, president, farm equipment business, noted that the early arrival of an above-normal monsoon and higher minimum support prices would likely support farmer sentiment and bolster tractor demand in the coming months.
In contrast, Tata Motors saw a decline in its overall performance. The company reported an 11% drop in domestic sales, which fell to 41,557 units in May from 46,697 units last year. Its commercial vehicle sales also slipped 5% year-on-year to 28,147 units.
Kia India continued to build on its momentum, posting a 14% rise in wholesales to 22,315 units, up from 19,500 units in May 2024. The company attributed the growth to strong demand for its latest launch, the Carens Clavis. “Our strong sales performance in May reflects the growing resonance of Kia’s diverse offerings across segments,” said Hardeep Singh Brar, senior vice president and national head of sales & marketing, Kia India.
JSW MG Motor India, the joint venture between JSW Group and China’s SAIC Motor, reported a robust 40% growth in wholesales to 6,304 units, compared to 4,510 units a year ago. Toyota Kirloskar recorded a 22% increase, selling 29,280 units, compared to 23,959 units in May 2024.
