Amid the heavy rainfall pouring across the capital for days, a road in northeast Delhi, which was temporarily transformed into a flood-relief camp, now seems like a messy and filthy fairground, filled with cow dung as cows are seen tied with bamboo poles, and tarpaulin tents placed across the roadside.
The long three-lane road has now shrunk to a single lane, making it difficult as well as unsafe for the commuters to travel.
This happened after the families displaced by overflowing drains due to heavy rainfall and floods were evacuated and shifted to tents on Pusta Road for safety.
Commuters suffer with consequences
Since the three-way road is now occupied with tents, motorists find it difficult to commute. The carriageway from Shastri Park is now reduced to a lane and a half, with commuters moving their vehicles like a tortoise.
On Friday, cars took four to five minutes just to cover 400 metres, while the traffic was packed up to a kilometre long.
However, on Thursday, it was worse. The traffic was idling from Shastri Park to Khajuri Chowk. While people heading to Karawal Nagar, Sonia Vihar and Bhajanpura were stuck on the road for hours.
Many commuters took the other way, diverting through Shanti Van, Geeta Colony flyover. However, it did not help with the traffic; rather, the jam stretched over from Geeta Colony Road to Shastri Park.
A section of the Delhi-Saharanpur Highway, which is currently blocked, was opened by the drivers, as they carved out a passage for two-wheelers. Many people made videos and shared them on social media. “Jam-hit public inaugurates Delhi–Dehradun Expressway,” one of the users wrote.
Another person posted, “Please open already constructed Delhi Dehradun Expressway Package 1 flyover Geeta Colony to Karawal Nagar. Due to the Yamuna flood, the Pusta road is 70% occupied by flood victims.”
The traffic officials addressed it and said that the situation is temporary and has worsened due to floods, assuring the passengers that it will be resolved.
