Football Injury Expert Predicts Extent of ‘Brutal’ James Maddison Injury

James Maddison suffered a very concerning injury during the Tottenham Hotspur pre-season friendly vs Newcastle United. During the latter stages of the match in South Korea, the midfielder collapsed and quickly came off.

Having missed the end of the last campaign, including the Europa League final, with fitness issues, there are now fresh fears that another long spell on the sidelines could be on the horizon. His teammates, including Son Heung-min – who recently announced he was leaving the club – looked extremely concerned by the events.

While it’s too early to be sure, an injury expert has offered their verdict on the possible issue.

James Maddison Could Have Suffered ACL Injury

There is a chance of better news though

Physio Scout, who correctly predicted Rodri’s ACL injury last September, took to social media to give their thoughts. They remarked that there is genuine ‘concern’ that it could be an ACL injury:

“James Maddison had to be stretchered off in a friendly for Tottenham vs. Newcastle.

“Concern for an ACL injury due to the cut-and-pivot nature of the movement. Valgus at the knee, direction change, and non-contact nature aren’t good signs.

“There is a chance that he’s only suffered a meniscus, isolated MCL injury or just a bone bruise. Can’t be 100% confident on my hypothesis as camera angles are really limiting, with no front-on view. But based on the movements, the injury mechanism doesn’t look great.”

If it is an ACL injury, Maddison can expect to spend a long time on the sidelines with a period of at least nine months needed to recover in most cases. That said, there is a chance he could return much sooner, if the injury is diagnosed differently. Physio Scout added:

“Potential Recovery Times: If ACL: 9+ months. If Meniscus: 3-4 months. If Bone Bruise: Less than a week.”

Thomas Frank Concerned After ‘Brutal’ Maddison Incident

“A bad injury”

Thomas Frank has already spoken on the injury, confirming it is an issue with the player’s knee. Talking to the press after the game (via The Standard), he said:

“We’re pretty sure it was the same knee he injured before.”

He added: “I think sometimes in life and football things can be both beautiful and brutal. That’s what we got today.

“It looks like with Madders a bad injury and then on the other side unbelieveable scenes for Son from his team-mates and the respect from the Newcastle players.”
