2012’s magical drama Beasts of the Southern Wild was a major success following its release. After a lengthy stay on streaming, however, the multi-Oscar-nominee is set to depart its HBO Max home very soon.
As the month turns to November, with it, new movies are leaving and joining HBO Max. One of the many titles leaving is Beasts of the Southern Wild, which is set to depart from the platform at the end of the month. For those looking to check it out ahead of its departure, it is also streaming on Hulu with an HBO Max subscription.
Beasts of the Southern Wild Made History at the Oscars
Directed by Benh Zeitlin, Beasts of the Southern Wild was written by Lucy Alibar and Zeitlin, and is based on Alibar’s one-act play Juicy and Delicious. The movie follows the story of a six-year-old girl named Hushpuppy and chronicles her journey through life as she tries to deal with life inside “The Bathtub,” an isolated village in Louisiana that’s been cut off from society as it exists on the other side of a levee system that protects the land from flooding.
Hushpuppy lives in “The Bathtub” with her father, Wink, whose health begins to deteriorate around the same time that a major storm begins brewing in the village. The movie then follows how Hushpuppy navigates life in the midst of all this, while also touching on her family life, how she navigates potentially losing her connection to home while the storm rages, and more.
Beasts of the Southern Wild was led by Quvenzhané Wallis, who played the role of Hushpuppy, and Dwight Henry, who plays Wink. The drama also starred Henry D. Coleman, Levy Easterly, Pamela Harper, Jovan Hathaway, and more. After its premiere, Beasts of the Southern Wild was a major hit, grossing over $23 million against a budget of just $1.8 million. It also earned critical acclaim, getting a score of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, with praise being pointed to the film’s themes of grief, love, and childhood coming-of-age.
That year, at the 85th Academy Awards, the drama was nominated for four awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress. At the age of 9, Wallis made history, becoming the youngest Best Actress nominee in the award’s history. Wallis didn’t take home the award, however, as that went to Jennifer Lawrence for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook.
Tons of New Movies Are Coming to HBO Max Next Month
Although Beasts of the Southern Wild is set to leave HBO Max in November, that doesn’t mean the streaming platform lacks thrilling suggestions. Next month will see some high-profile movies arriving on the streaming platform, with both classics and brand-new titles arriving. This includes new releases like 2026’s Tony, the biographical film on Anthony Bourdain, as well as The Magic Faraway Tree, the fantasy adventure starring Rebecca Ferguson and Andrew Garfield.
For those looking to get into the holiday spirit early, HBO Max is also adding plenty of holiday-themed movies, including the legendary comedy Elf, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, and A Christmas Story. Some hit TV shows will also be arriving, including Season 4 of The Gilded Age, and the third season of Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking.
Beasts of the Southern Wild is available to stream on HBO Max until Oct. 31.
