Former A-list music manager Scooter Braun has reflected on his public controversies with Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber, arguing the backlash he received was “not deserved.”
In an interview with The Diary of a CEO podcast this week, the 43-year-old discussed his public controversies, following the major update that Taylor has bought the rights back to her music. In the new episode, Scooter took a look back at his controversies in the public eye and the ongoing hate he has received as a result of his major fallouts with Taylor and Justin.
In 2019 the independent record label the Big Machine Label Group was acquired by Scooter’s Ithaca Holdings LLC for over $300 million, which included the rights to Taylor’s first six albums. After the deal, Taylor wrote a scathing open letter on Tumblr regarding the sale in which she shared her disappointment and frustration with Scooter.
Responding to the hate he was met with following this, Scooter said: “I was just shocked. I don’t need to go back into it, but what I can tell you is everything in life is a gift. Having that experience allows me to have empathy for the people I worked with who I would always say, ‘Yeah, I understand.’

He continued: “But I never knew what it was like to be on the global stage like that. I never knew what criticism like that felt like. All the praise I had received up until that moment was not deserved. All the hate I got after that moment was not deserved, because none of these people knew me. The gift of pain was awareness.”
And while he was frustrated at the time, Scooter shared that he holds no animosity towards the pop star now. Scooter said: “Everyone moves on. I choose to see it as a gift. I choose to see it as being able to have a perspective that very few people in the world have of knowing what that’s like. Of feeling that on a global level.”

As for Justin, Scooter worked as his manager for a little over a decade, starting in 2008 and continuing until 2023. The pair ended their professional relationship allegedly due to financial issues, and Scooter admitted that their relationship now is “not the same that it was.”
The New York native explained: “I think there comes a point where, I understand, he probably wants to go on and show that he can do it. We worked together for so long and we had such extreme success.”
Scooter continued: “I think you get to a point as a man where you want to show the world, you can do it on your own. I completely respect that. I think at this point that’s what he’s doing.”

According to reports, Justin allegedly owes Scooter a significant sum of money, possibly in the range of $8 million or more. Since they’ve parted ways, Scooter retired from the music management industry and is focusing on his family and CEO of HYBE America. As for Justin, he is continuing to pursue his passion for music, but does not have a formal music manager at this time.
Speaking on their decision to part ways, Scooter said: “At that point it had been a couple years where I knew I wanted to do something else, and I wanted to find out who I was. I wanted to experiment with, you know, a different career and we were both communicating enough with each other. The writing was on the wall.”
