Former Rangers chief ‘top candidate for Newcastle role’

The Premier League club is searching for a new sporting director after Paul Mitchell’s departure.

The Athletic suggests Wilson, who served almost four years at Ibrox, is the top pick for the role.

Wilson is currently the chief football officer at Nottingham Forest.

He is claimed to have a strong relationship with manager Eddie Howe and co-owner James Reuben, which helped his candidacy.

Despite this, it is reported that Newcastle have not yet approached Nottingham Forest regarding Wilson.

Wilson’s experience includes a stint on Rangers’ board between 2019 and 2023.

He has also held senior roles at Southampton and Huddersfield.

Upon his departure from Rangers in 2023, Wilson said: “I would like to thank the players, led superbly by captain James Tavernier, and the manager Michael Beale, as well as all those who have come before them in the three and a half years I have spent at [[Rangers]].

“I would like to thank Douglas Park, Stewart Robertson and the board for their support.

“I wish John Bennett – a true [[Rangers]] man – a successful chairmanship.

“This is a great club, and there are so many reasons for Rangers to face the decades ahead with optimism and pride.

“Thank you for your support.

“I wish everyone associated with Rangers nothing but the best for the future.”

Arsenal’s assistant sporting director, Jason Ayto, is also believed to have been in discussions with Newcastle regarding the vacancy.
